community college education has roots directly linked san diego city college when in 1914, board of education of san diego city schools authorized postsecondary classes youth of san diego. classes opened fall @ san diego high school 4 faculty members , 35 students, establishing san diego city college third community college in california.


in 1921, city college moved high school share facilities san diego state teachers college (now known san diego state university). 25 years, junior college program remained @ san diego state university. during period, in 1938, san diego vocational junior college established offer training in technical-vocational skills post high school students. following year, san diego evening junior college set provide college classes in evening adults unable attend classes during day.


city times, student newspaper, founded in 1945 jay sees , later renamed fortknightly bi-weekly publication. paper become city times in 1978. journalism program published yearbook through 1950s called legend.


by 1946, city college moved san diego high school , reorganized 3 branches: san diego vocational high school, san diego college arts , sciences, , san diego evening junior college. city college took permanent campus , during 1950s , 60s, land acquired allow expansion through various blocks of today s northeast downtown san diego. additional property added campus in 1970s.


the campus has received extensive expansion , renovations in last 20 years starting opening of 3,000-square-foot (280 m) fitness center in 1992. educational technology center opened in 2000 along learning resource center (lrc) in 2002. happened @ same time sdcc changed placement test aps compass. harry west gymnasium opened in 2005, academic success center in 2009 , career technology center inaugurated in late 2010.


the latest projects being funded bond measure, propositions s , n, passed in 2002 , 2006, of $1,979 billion monies dispersed throughout district. further construction , renovations taking place , continue through 2014 @ city college, including construction of new arts , humanities, math , science , engineering technology buildings.
