an area of disturbed weather on bahamas developed tropical depression on august 23, becoming tropical storm on august 24 , hurricane on august 25. made landfall on august 25 in southern florida, emerging few hours later gulf of mexico. katrina rapidly intensified category 5 status on morning of august 28, becoming fourth intense recorded hurricane in atlantic basin. hurricane weakened category 4 turned northward, , weakened category 3 hurricane 125 mph (200 km/h) winds made landfall in southeastern louisiana (as confirmed post-storm report; estimated category 4 landfall). hours later, crossed breton sound , held strength, making third , final landfall 120 mph (190 km/h) winds near pearlington, mississippi.


the mississippi , alabama coastlines suffered catastrophic damage storm s 30-foot (9m) storm surge. new orleans escaped worst damage storm, levees along gulf intracoastal waterway , 17th street , london avenue canals breached storm surge, flooding 80% of city. 1,836 people confirmed dead across 7 states. katrina costliest , 1 of deadliest natural disasters in u.s. history, damage totals around us$81.2 billion ($113 billion 2017 usd). deadliest storm of 2005 season. damage , fatality estimates remain incomplete.
