during 2011 yemeni protests, tawakkol karman organised student rallies in sana in protest against long-standing rule of saleh s government. on 22 january, stopped while driving husband 3 plain-clothed men without police identification , taken prison, held 36 hours until released on parole on 24 january. in 9 april editorial appeared in guardian, wrote:

she led protest on 29 january called day of rage on 3 february similar events of 2011 egyptian revolution in turn inspired 2010–2011 tunisian revolution. on 17 march, re-arrested amidst ongoing protests. speaking of uprising had said that: continue until fall of ali abdullah saleh s regime...we have southern movement in south, (shia) huthi rebels in north, , parliamentary opposition...but s important jasmine revolution. has set @ protest camp months along husband.

during protests, karman part of large number of women activists—up 30 percent of protestors—demanding change in yemen. on 16 october, government snipers in taiz shot , killed aziza othman kaleb, cnn reported first woman have been killed during yemen protests not verify claim. ten days later, women in sana protested against violent force used against them burning makrama. @ time, karman in washington, d.c., said female protesters burned makrama reject(ing) injustice saleh regime has imposed on them. , new stage yemeni women, because not hide behind veils or behind walls or else.


involvement of international government organizations

after nobel peace prize announcement, tawakkol karman became increasingly involved in mobilizing world opinion , united nations security council members assist protesters in ousting saleh , bringing him before international court.


she lobbied united nations security council , united states not make deal pardon saleh, instead hold him accountable, freeze assets , support protesters. united nations security council voted 15–0 on 21 october on united nations security council resolution 2014 condemns saleh s government use of deadly force against protesters, backed gulf cooperation council s (gcc) initiative give saleh immunity prosecution should resign. karman, present vote, criticised council s support gcc s proposal , instead advocated saleh stand trial @ international criminal court.


karman met united states secretary of state hillary clinton on 28 october discuss same united nations resolution, clinton said united states supports democratic transition in yemen , rights of people of yemen – men , women – choose own leaders , futures. karman responded comment through yemini press saying, in yemen, has been 9 months people have been camped in squares. until didn t see obama came value sacrifice of yemeni people. instead american administration giving guarantees saleh.


saleh signed gulf cooperation council s plan 23 november 2011 in riyadh, saudi arabia. saleh transfer powers vice president abd al-rab mansur al-hadi start political transition, according terms of agreement.
