the flat earth model gave way understanding of spherical earth. aristotle (384–322 bce) provided observational arguments supporting idea of spherical earth, namely different stars visible in different locations, travelers going south see southern constellations rise higher above horizon, , shadow of earth on moon during lunar eclipse round, , spheres cast circular shadows while discs not.
this understanding accompanied models of universe depicted sun, moon, stars, , naked eye planets circling spherical earth, including noteworthy models of aristotle (see aristotelian physics) , ptolemy. geocentric model dominant model 4th century bce until 17th century ce.
