the route trail known ozark trail, main series of routes in area prior construction of u.s. route 66. ozark trails association responsible maintaining , marking routes, william hope harvey in charge. harvey wanted auto trail oklahoma resort town monte ne, established after retiring railroad business. had grand visions of trails connecting monte ne st. louis, kansas city, wichita, kansas, , oklahoma city, , points west. u.s. route 62 gateway eureka springs designated part of jefferson highway, although highway not marked , shifted. highway listed proposed primary federal aid road on state map in first issue of arkansas highways magazine (1924), not numbered.


the road brought lots of traffic through hills of arkansas, resistant development. eureka springs popular stop on route, many motor inns , vibrant downtown. nearby arkansas highway 23 (the pig trail) further added tourists community. further east, cities of mountain home, cotter, , flippin grew 62 s traffic. rough terrain interspersed large waterways caused need large bridges, including cotter bridge (which replaced ferry system) , st. louis-san francisco overpass. 1981 study indicated need of 31 climbing lanes harrison hardy (approx. 110 miles (180 km)) necessary safety purposes, indicative of rough terrain.


some historic alignments of old road still exist original pavement. 1 section, built between 1932 , bypassed in 1952, located between busch , eureka springs on either side of white river. on north side of river carroll county route 109 follows alignment former river crossing, concrete bridge piers remain seen. on south side county route 107 continues southward, rejoining modern alignment. section listed on national register of historic places in 2008.
