general post office, late 1820s.


adjacent modern roundabout on site of aldersgate former headquarters of general post office (closed in 1910 , demolished shortly afterwards), , adjoining postman s park. southern part of roundabout , northern part of post office once stood located on site of collegiate church , sanctuary founded in 750 withu, king of kent, hugely expanded in 1056 ingebrian, earl of essex, , issued royal charter in 1068 william conqueror. site of church cleared in 1818 in preparation construction of post office.


most of buildings on aldersgate street destroyed or badly damaged in world war ii. entire length of eastern side of street occupied 40-acre (162,000m²) barbican residential , arts complex.
