geographic tongue, termed benign migratory glossitis, common condition affects dorsal surface of tongue. characterized patches of depapillation , erythema bordered whitish peripheral zone. these patches give tongue appearance of map, hence name. unlike glossitis due nutritional deficiencies , anemia, lesions of geographic tongue move around tongue on time. because in geographic tongue, new areas of tongue become involved condition whilst affected areas heal, giving appearance of moving lesion. cause unknown, , there no curative treatment. there symptoms associated lesions, burning sensation may present, exacerbated eating hot, spicy or acidic foodstuffs. consider geographic tongue stage of fissured tongue, since 2 conditions occur in combination.
