during french , indian war, charles deschamps de boishébert et de raffetot led acadian , mi`kmaq resistance expulsion of acadians. toward end, acadians evade capture, boishébert set acadian refugee camp on island. camp named camp de l esperance. camp lasted between 1756 - 1759.


after louisbourg fell on 26 july 1758, french officer boishébert withdrew, british in pursuit. boishebert brought large number of acadians region around port-toulouse (st. peter s, nova scotia) security of post @ beaubears island on miramichi river.


during ile saint-jean campaign , st. john river campaign number of acadian refugees increased dramatically. camp had 900 french refugees. on 200 of refugees died @ camp. during war, camp protected battery of 16 french cannons @ french fort cove.


during gulf of st. lawrence campaign, on september 15, 1758, brigadier james murray @ miramichi , discovered there many acadian refugees @ settlement ten leagues miramichi river had fled during ile saint-jean campaign. according murray, of acadians starving. had sent of effects on canada , expected go there themselves.

beaubears (boishébert) island , nearby wilson s point (a.k.a. beaubears point or enclosure) form boishébert national historic site of canada.


j. leonard o brien , shipbuilding

the first shipyard established james fraser , james thom (1790). first half of eighteenth century, fraser shipyard considered important commercial establishment in new brunswick. 1850s regarded golden age of miramichi shipbuilding yards in operation beaubears island. harley continued build ships , in 1866 launched believed last vessel constructed @ beaubears, barque la plata.


by end of 19th century, island appears have been deserted. acquired o brien family in 1920 , willed government of canada in 1973 following death of joseph leonard o brien, former lieutenant governor of new brunswick.


beaubears island shipbuilding national historic site of canada, known j. leonard o brien memorial, known, undisturbed archaeological site associated national significance of 19th century wooden shipbuilding industry in new brunswick. in accordance o brien s wishes, island willed parks canada , remains integral part of canadian history whole.
