african slaves freed in north american colonies seventeenth century. (such anthony johnson) went on become landowners , slaveholders in colonies. slaves arrange manumission agreeing purchase ; is, pay master agreed amount. masters demanded market rates; others set lower amount in consideration of service.


regulation of manumission began in 1692, when virginia established in order manumit slave, person must pay cost them transported out of colony. 1723 law stated slaves may not set free upon pretence whatsoever, except meritorious services adjudged , allowed governor , council. in cases, when master drafted army, sent slave in place, promise of freedom if survived war. new government of virginia repealed these laws in 1782 , declared freedom slaves had fought colonies in american revolutionary war. 1782 laws permitted masters free slaves on own accord; previously, manumission required obtaining consent state legislature, arduous , granted request. however, population of free negroes increased, state passed laws forbidding free negroes moving state (1778) , requiring newly freed slaves leave within 1 year unless had special permission (1806).


in upper south in late eighteenth century, planters had less need slaves switched labor-intensive tobacco cultivation mixed-crop farming. slave states such virginia made easier slaveholders free slaves. in 2 decades following american revolutionary war, numerous slaveholders accomplished manumissions deed or in wills, percentage of free blacks total number of blacks rose less 1 percent 10 percent in upper south. in virginia, proportion of free blacks increased 1% in 1782 7% in 1800. several northern states abolishing slavery during period, percentage of free blacks nationally increased 13.5 percent of total black population. new york , new jersey adopted gradual abolition laws kept free children of slaves indentured servants twenties.


after invention of cotton gin in 1793, enabled development of extensive new areas new types of cotton cultivation, manumissions decreased due increased demand slave labor. in nineteenth century, slave revolts such haitian revolution , 1831 rebellion led nat turner increased slaveholder fears, , southern states passed laws making manumission impossible until passage of thirteenth amendment united states constitution, abolished slavery, except punishment crime whereof party shall have been duly convicted, after american civil war in 1865.
