the site of musée du quai branly, on left bank of seine, facing palais de chaillot, , hundred meters eiffel tower, had been occupied buildings of ministry of reconstruction , urbanism. international competition led selection of architect jean nouvel design new museum. original proposal museum had called garden occupying 7,500 square meters of 25,000 square meter site. nouvel increased gardens 17,500 square meters, , made series of different gardens integral part of museum. largest section, garden of movement , between rue de l universite , quai branly, composition of small gardens created landscape architect gilles clement, designed appear wild , opposite of french classical garden. other notable feature of garden mur vegetale or wall of vegetation , designed patrick blanc; composition of 15,000 plants of 150 different species cover 800 square meters of exterior facades of museum , 150 square meters of interior walls. wall renewed , trimmed each year.
