vas name of historic administrative county (comitatus) of kingdom of hungary. territory in western hungary, eastern austria , eastern slovenia. capital of county szombathely.


vas county arose 1 of first comitatus of kingdom of hungary.


in 1920, treaty of trianon western part of county became part of new austrian land burgenland, , smaller part in southwest, known vendvidék became part of newly formed kingdom of serbs, croats , slovenes (later renamed yugoslavia). in vendvidék in 1919 founded unrecognized state prekmurje republic, alike in burgenland lajtabánság. remainder stayed in hungary, present hungarian county vas. small part of former sopron county went vas county. villages north of zalaegerszeg went zala county, , small region west of pápa went veszprém county.


since 1991, when slovenia became independent yugoslavia, yugoslavian part of former vas county (around murska sobota) part of slovenia.


the vas county home small slovene minority, lives in area between town of szentgotthárd , slovenian border (see hungarian slovenes).
