the treaty adopted united nations general assembly on 10 september 1996. opened signature in new york on 24 september 1996, when signed 71 states, including 5 of 8 nuclear-capable states. of october 2016, 166 states have ratified ctbt , 17 states have signed not ratified it.


the treaty enter force 180 days after 44 states listed in annex 2 of treaty have ratified it. these annex 2 states states participated in ctbt’s negotiations between 1994 , 1996 , possessed nuclear power reactors or research reactors @ time. of 2016, 8 annex 2 states have not ratified treaty: china, egypt, iran, israel , united states have signed not ratified treaty; india, north korea , pakistan have not signed it.
