the arlington mills occupy 75 acres (30 ha) of land straddling boundary between lawrence , methuen. bounded on east broadway, historic post road, , on west spicket river, supplied power. complex has 23 buildings, of of brick construction. largest 1896 wool-combing mill, 750 feet (230 m) long, while 1906 worsted weaving mill 600 feet (180 m) long.


the first industrial use of site 1820, when abiel stevens built wood-frame factory in piano cases built. stevens first mill burned in 1855, , rebuilt following year. arlington mills company began operation in 1865, after purchasing location; investors owners of lawrence s other mill operations. in 1880 1865 building demolished , replaced new brick structure, termed worsted-weave shed 1 of surviving buildings. complex grew on years, , 1925 1 of largest textile factories in state. during world war supplied large quantities of flannel , wool shirting united states army. arlington mills company suffered financial reverses during great depression, , closed doors in 1952.
