Higher education Education in Iran



as of 2013, 4.5 million students enrolled in universities, out of total population of 75 million. iranian universities churn out 750,000 skilled graduates annually.


the tradition of university education in iran goes centuries of islam. 20th century, however, system had become antiquated , remodeled along french lines. country s 16 universities closed after 1979 revolution , reopened gradually between 1982 , 1983 under islamic supervision.


while universities closed, cultural revolution committee investigated professors , teachers , dismissed believers in marxism, liberalism, , other imperialistic ideologies. universities reopened islamic curricula. in 1997, higher-level institutions had 40,477 teachers , enrolled 579,070 students.


the syllabus of universities in iran decided national council result difference of quality of education among universities based on location , quality of students , faculty members. among top universities in country there 3 universities each notable reasons:


the university of tehran (founded in 1934) has 10 faculties, including department of islamic theology. oldest (in modern system) , biggest university in iran. has been birthplace of several social , political movements.


tarbiat modares university (means: professor training university) located in tehran exclusively post-graduate institute in iran. offers master s, phd, , postdoc programs. comprehensive iranian university in sense university under iranian ministry of science system has medical school. other medical schools in iran separate university , governed under ministry of health; example tehran university of medical sciences (commonly known medical school of tehran university) in fact separate tehran university.


sharif university of technology located in tehran nationally known taking in top undergraduate engineering , science students; , internationally recognized training competent under graduate students. has highest percentage of graduates seek higher education abroad.


k.n.toosi university of technology , amirkabir university of technology among prestigious universities in tehran. other major universities @ shiraz, tabriz, esfahan, mashhad, ahvaz, kerman, kermanshah, babolsar, rasht, , orumiyeh. there 50 colleges , 40 technological institutes.


in 2009, 33.7% of in 18-25 age group enrolled in 1 of 92 universities, 512 payame noor university branches, , 56 research , technology institutes around country. there 3.7 million university students in iran , 1.5 million study @ 500 branches of islamic azad university. iran had 1 million medical students in 2011.



entrepreneurship

in recent decades iran has shown increasing interest in various entrepreneurship fields, in higher educational settings, policy making , business. although primary , secondary school textbooks not address entrepreneurship, several universities including tehran university , sharif university, offer courses on entrepreneurship undergraduate , graduate students.


in accordance third five-year development plan, “entrepreneurship development plan in iranian universities”, (known karad plan) developed, , launched in twelve universities across country, under supervision of management , planning organization , ministry of science, research , technology.
