ancient israel

al-ram thought site of biblical city of ramah in benjamin.


medieval period

in crusader sources, al-ram named aram, haram, rama, ramatha, ramitta, or ramathes.


al-ram 1 of 21 villages given king godfrey fief church of holy sepulchre.


all inhabitants of village mentioned in crusader sources between 1152 , 1160 had names imply christian.


the village mentioned around 1161, when dispute land boundary settled.


ottoman era

in 1517, village included in ottoman empire rest of palestine, , in 1596 tax-records appeared rama, located in nahiya of jabal quds of liwa of al-quds. population 28 households, muslim. paid fixed tax-rate of 33,3% on agricultural products, including wheat, barley, olive trees , vineyards, in addition occasional revenues, goats , beehives; total of 4700 akçe.


in 1838 edward robinson found village poor , small, large stones , scattered columns indicated had been important place. in 1870 french explorer victor guérin found village have 200 inhabitants, while ottoman village list of same year showed al-ram had 32 houses , population of 120, though population count included men only.


in 1883, palestine exploration fund s survey of western palestine described er ram small village in conspicuous position on top of white hill, olives. has south. [..] houses of stone, partly built of old material . west of village birkeh pointed vault; lower down hill pillar-shaft broken in two, church. on hill cisterns. drafted stones used in village walls. @ khan er ram, main road, quarry half-finished blocks still in it, , 2 cisterns. khan appears quite modern, , in ruins. there extensive quarries on hill-sides near it.


in 1896 population of er-ram estimated 240 persons.


british mandate era

in 1922 census of palestine conducted british mandate authorities, ram had population 208, muslims. had increased in 1931 census 262, still muslim, in 51 houses. al-ram suffered badly in 1927 earthquake, old walls collapsing.


in survey in 1945, er ram had population of 350, muslims, , total land area of 5,598 dunams. 441 dunams designated plantations , irrigable land, 2,291 cereals, while 14 dunams built-up area.


post-1948

in wake of 1948 arab–israeli war, , after 1949 armistice agreements, al-ram came under jordanian rule. captured israel along rest of east jerusalem , west bank, , has been under israeli occupation since then.


in 2006, israeli high court rejected 3 petitions objecting construction of security barrier separating a-ram jerusalem. route of fence planned encircle northern jerusalem has been revised several times. latest plan calls minimalist route leaves village of a-ram east of fence. according current plan, still subject revision, fence approach a-ram, near atarot airport , qalandiyah.
