International reaction 2011–15 Myanmar political reforms

although government has been applauded reforms, many countries remain cautiously optimistic . japan has resumed sending aid suspended after 2007 killing of japanese journalist. asean has approved burma s bid chair in 2014.


the united states, australia , eu have called further action, such unconditional release of political prisoners, prerequisite lifting of international sanctions on myanma government. united states has appointed special envoy, derek mitchell, chart new policy myanmar away isolation.


improvement in u.s.-burmese relations

following government reforms in 2011 , visit of u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton country, u.s. announced several initiatives, including removal of curbs on foreign aid, aimed @ re-engagement myanmar, step toward restoration of full diplomatic relations. in january 2012, following release of prominent political prisoners including min ko naing, u.s. , myanmar restored full diplomatic relations , exchanged ambassadors, though further ties dependent on additional reforms.


in september 2016, cardin-mccain burma strategy act of 2016, piece of bipartisan proposed u.s. legislation, introduced senate. legislation seeks set benchmarks , guidelines on sanctions relief calling on u.s. secretary of state assess , make recommendations regarding modifying or lifting sanctions, focus on issues such democracy , ethnic reconciliation. legislation authorize humanitarian aid; authorize economic aid support burmese civil society groups; create burma-america development fund foster private-sector investment; , authorize limited military-to-military relations.
