valentien born in cincinnati, ohio on 11 may 1862, anna marie wolter , frederick valentine. studied art @ school of design of university of cincinnati (later cincinnati art academy), working thomas s. noble , frank duveneck. fellow student john rettig, valentien studied decoration of china, learning underglazed pottery decoration t(homas) j. wheatley.


he married artist anna marie bookprinter (née buchdrucker) in 1887.


rookwood

in 1887 joined rookwood pottery company, , led art pottery s decoration department next twenty years.


in 1903, valentiens visited southern california, staying several months anna s brother in dulzura, small community southeast of san diego. during visit, valentien produced 135 paintings of california wildflowers, exhibiting collection @ state normal school in san diego (present day san diego state university).


retiring rookwood in 1905, valentiens moved san diego in 1908.

carpenteria californica (tree anemone) (c.1908–1918), valentien collection, san diego natural history museum.


ellen browning scripps commissioned valentien paint series of illustrations of california wildflowers intention of publishing compendium of flora of california. valentien worked on project ten years, , scope of botanical subjects grew encompass native grasses, ferns, , trees. scripps decided not publish flora. estate donated of paintings in collection, 1094 in total, san diego natural history museum in 1933.


albert robert valentien died on august 5, 1925 in san diego, california.
