a lifeboat station established in lynmouth on 20 january 1869, 5 months after sailing vessel home wrecked nearby. lifeboat kept in shed on beach, until purpose-built boat house built @ harbour. rebuilt in 1898 , enlarged in 1906–07. closed @ end of 1944 because other stations in area provide cover newer motor lifeboats. boat house used club, washed away in flood of 15 august 1952. has since been rebuilt, , includes public shelter.


at 7:52 pm on 12 january 1899, 1,900 ton three-masted ship forrest hall, carrying thirteen crew , 5 apprentices, in trouble off porlock weir on north somerset coast, owing severe gale had been blowing day. had been under tow, tow rope had broken. dragging anchor , had lost steering gear. ship s destruction probable. alarm raised louisa, lynmouth lifeboat, launched assist. however, launching impossible because of terrible weather. jack crocombe, coxswain of louisa, proposed take boat road porlock s sheltered harbour, 13 miles (21 km) around coast, , launch there.
