alec issigonis born 18 november 1906, greek cosmopolitan community of ottoman port smyrna (now İzmir, turkey) in asia minor. son of greek , german parents, inherited british citizenship via father , developed english attitudes. grandfather demosthenis migrated smyrna paros in greece in 1830s , through work did british-built smyrna-aydın railway managed acquire british nationality. demosthenis s son (alec s father) constantine issigonis (greek: Κωνσταντίνος Ισηγόνης), born, british nationality, in smyrna in 1872. constantine studied in england. alec s mother, hulda prokopp, trace origins württemberg (now part of germany). through mother s kinships issigonis first cousin once removed bmw (and more briefly volkswagen) director bernd pischetsrieder.


because alec , parents british subjects, evacuated malta british royal marines in september 1922, ahead of great fire of smyrna , turkish capture of smyrna @ end of greco-turkish war. following death of father in 1922, alec , mother moved uk in 1923. alec studied engineering @ battersea polytechnic in london. failed mathematics exams 3 times , subsequently called pure mathematics enemy of every creative genius . after battersea polytechnic, alec decided enter university of london external programme complete university education.
