Qualification Golf at the 2016 Summer Olympics



qualification based on world ranking of 11 july 2016, total of 60 players qualifying in each of men s , women s events. top 15 players of each gender qualify, limit of 4 golfers per country can qualify way. remaining spots go highest-ranked players countries not have 2 golfers qualified. igf has guaranteed @ least 1 golfer host nation , each geographical region (africa, americas, asia, europe, , oceania) qualify. igf posts weekly lists of qualifiers based on current rankings men , women.


a number of golfers withdrew, reasons including zika virus epidemic , schedules, while others not selected national olympic committee. top male golfers withdrew in larger numbers top female golfers. said women s golf needed exposure games far more men s golf. missing eligible golfers, rankings @ qualification date, were:

both male , female golfers cited zika virus cause withdraw games. virus can live longer in semen in blood, , might infect male golfer s partner 6 months later or more, therefore causing birth defects way. other reasons withdrawals have been suggested.
