trained in u.s. c-47s, 1943-jan1944. moved england, february–march 1944, duty ninth air force.


the group began operations dropping paratroops of 101st airborne division in normandy on d-day (6 june 1944) , releasing gliders reinforcements on following day. group received distinguished unit citation , french citation these missions. after normandy invasion group ferried supplies in united kingdom until air echelon sent italy in july transport cargo rome , evacuate wounded personnel. detachment dropped paratroops of 517th parachute infantry regiment along riviera in support of invasion of southern france on 15 august, , later towed gliders provide reinforcements; these missions group earned citation french government. after air echelon returned england on 25 august group resumed cargo missions.


after moving france in september, group dropped paratroops of 82nd airborne division near nijmegen , towed gliders carrying reinforcements during airborne attack on netherlands. in december, participated in battle of bulge releasing gliders supplies 101st airborne division near bastogne. when allies made air assault across rhine river in march 1945, each aircraft of 439th towed 2 gliders troops of 17th airborne division , released them near wesel. group hauled food, clothing, medicine, gasoline, ordnance equipment, , other supplies front lines , evacuated patients rear zone hospitals. converted c-47s c-46s , 439th used new aircraft transport displaced persons germany france , belgium after v-e day.


the group returned u.s. during period july–september 1945, , trained c-46 aircraft until inactivated.
