mitropoulos s father merchant navy chief engineer officer , mother daughter of shipmaster , owner of brigantines , schooners. mitropoulos husband of chantal byvoet, whom had 2 children, namely elias , athina mitropoulos.


educational background

he studied secondary education st. paul french college in city of piraeus in greece. studied @ aspropyrgos merchant marine academy in athens @ attica 1957 1959. after apprenticeship on board merchant ships 1959 1962, mitropoulos studied @ hellenic coast guard academy 1962 1964.


career

after studying @ hellenic coast guard academy in 1964, mitropoulos practiced coast guard officer in corfu in piraeus, retiring rear admiral. studied shipping economics in italy in 1965, marine technology in united kingdom in 1970. started career member of greek delegation in 1966. among achievement included laying down of foundation establishing joint maritime , aeronautical search , rescue centre of greece. harbor master of corfu 1977 1979.


he began career @ international maritime organization in january 1979. held positions such implementation officer of maritime safety division (1979), head of navigation section (1985), senior deputy director navigation , related matters (1989), director of maritime safety division (1992), secretary of maritime safety committee (1992), assistant secretary-general (2000), , secretary-general beginning 2004. first tenure 2004 2008. second term began in 2008 , completed in december 2011. acted chancellor of world maritime university in sweden (2004) , governing board chairman of international maritime law institute in malta (2004). mitropoulos serves patron of itf seafarers trust.
