the horned coot monogamous, , breeds in colonies of 80 pairs. huge nest typically located 40 metres shore in waters of high altitude lakes breeds. pebbles piled birds form artificial island reaches water surface. island covered algae form nest. has been estimated pebble mounds may weigh as 1.5 tons , refurbished in each season. breed november january.
