Gameplay Asteroids (video game)



a ship surrounded asteroids , saucer.


the objective of asteroids destroy asteroids , saucers. player controls triangular ship can rotate left , right, fire shots straight forward, , thrust forward. once ship begins moving in direction, continue in direction time without player intervention unless player applies thrust in different direction. ship comes stop when not thrusting. player can send ship hyperspace, causing disappear , reappear in random location on screen, @ risk of self-destructing or appearing on top of asteroid.


each level starts few large asteroids drifting in various directions on screen. objects wrap around screen edges – instance, asteroid drifts off top edge of screen reappears @ bottom , continues moving in same direction. player shoots asteroids, break smaller asteroids move faster , more difficult hit. smaller asteroids worth more points. 2 flying saucers appear periodically on screen; big saucer shoots randomly , poorly, while small saucer fires @ ship. after reaching score of 40,000, small saucer appears. player s score increases, angle range of shots small saucer diminishes until saucer fires extremely accurately. once screen has been cleared of asteroids , flying saucers, new set of large asteroids appears, starting next level. game gets harder number of asteroids increases until after score reaches range between 40,000 , 60,000. player starts 3 lives after coin inserted , gains life per 10,000 points. when player loses lives, game ends.


asteroids contains several bugs. game slows down player gains 50-100 lives, due programming error in there no limit permitted number of lives. player can lose game after more 250 lives collected.
