the government of canada doesn t recognize unbroken lineage of royal newfoundland regiment earlier units there gaps in existence. however, recognizes regiment commemorates history , heritage of previous units. in respect canada has awarded 3 battle honours regiment commemorate services rendered during war of 1812 royal newfoundland regiment of fencible infantry , recognizes battle honours earned iteration of regiment during first world war.

originated 25 april 1795 when captain thomas skinner of royal engineers given permission raise fencible infantry company consisting of 6 hundred men.
disbanded march 1802 following signing of treaty of amiens

in june 1803, brigadier general john skerrett founds royal newfoundland regiment of fencible infantry.
