notes issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 , 100 pounds. of these denominations, 1 pound has ceased issued banks, last produced allied irish banks in 1984. 5 pound note issued bank of ireland , ulster bank, , northern bank stopped issuing notes on £20 when rebranded danske bank.

until april 2008, bank of ireland notes featured queen s university of belfast on reverse side. new series of £5, £10 , £20 notes issued in may 2008, featuring illustration of old bushmills distillery, , these notes gradually replace previous series.

first trust bank notes

first trust bank subsidiary of allied irish banks (aib). aib formed in 1966 merger of group of smaller banks. following merger, banknotes issued provincial bank of ireland reissued allied irish banks name. in 1991, aib merged tsb northern ireland , began trading first trust bank, , since then, bank s notes have been issued under first trust bank name.


first trust bank s current notes have generic depiction of northern irish person. young middle-aged man appears on £10 note, elderly woman on £20 note, elderly man on £50 note, , both elderly people on £100 note. obverse designs feature images associated spanish armada, commemorating wrecking of 24 armada ships off coast of county antrim in 1588:

following £26.5 million pound robbery in 2004 @ northern bank s money handling centre in belfast, northern bank announced, on 7 january 2005, notes recalled , reissued in different colours , styles, , using bank s new logo. reissue began on 14 march 2005 , scheduled take 1 month; old notes remain exchangeable @ branches of northern bank.


in 2012, northern bank adopted name of copenhagen-based parent company danske bank group , trades danske bank. northern bank had been subsidiary of midland bank , subsequently national australia bank, , banknote design has changed on years company changed hands.


in june 2013, bank issued new series of £10 , £20 notes bearing new danske bank name in place of northern bank; @ same time announced cease production of £50 , £100 notes, supplying bank of england notes instead. older notes bearing northern bank name continue in circulation time gradually withdrawn, , remain acceptable forms of payment. in spite of danish name on new notes, banknotes issued danske bank sterling notes , should not confused banknotes of danish krone issued danmarks nationalbank, national bank of denmark.


most danske bank banknotes depict range of notable people associated industry in northern ireland on obverse. reverse of each note has illustration of portico of belfast city hall, sculpted f. w. pomeroy. principal colours of northern bank notes of greater £5 face value changed 2005 reissue, , (former colour in pre-2004 column):



while danske bank not issue £5 notes, special commemorative £5 note issued northern bank mark year 2000. uniquely among sterling notes, polymer banknote, printed canadian bank note company (cbn) on australia synthetic polymer substrate instead of paper, making northern ireland first part of uk have issued plastic banknote. 1 of bank s pre-2004 notes still in circulation; others recalled following 2004 robbery. isle of man issued polymer £1 note between 1983 , 1988, but, technically, island crown dependency, , not part of uk.

ulster bank s current notes share rather plain design of view of belfast harbour flanked landscape views; design of reverse dominated bank s coat of arms. principal difference between denominations colour , size. notes issued 1 january 2007 feature bank s new logo, similar royal bank of scotland group logo. appears beside bank s name, appears in different typeface, , in place of natwest chevron foil device.

in november 2006 ulster bank issued first commemorative banknote – issue of 1 million £5 notes commemorating first anniversary of death of northern irish footballer george best. first ulster bank banknote incorporate new logo, similar logo of royal bank of scotland group, , entire issue taken collectors within hours of becoming available in bank branches.


ulster bank plans release new polymer banknotes in 2019 replacing current paper ones
