History Alamo Heights Independent School District







the alamo heights independent school district traces history year 1909 when first school, two-room wooden frame building on townsend avenue, built in picturesque area part of rural county district. new school building of masonry later constructed on site cambridge elementary school. in 1923, 1 year after high school building added growing campus, alamo heights system became independent school district of 300 students.


while hub of activity alamo heights students centered @ cambridge until 1950s, district branched out neighboring community @ former cement plant near jones-maltsberger road, called cementville. known bluebonnet school, alamo heights ward school served children parents worked @ plant.


the present athletic stadium built in 1938 work projects administration. originally, games played @ howard field on present cambridge site, former head coach earl mule frazier led football team first district championship in 1926 - , lent alamo heights mascot.


world war ii responsible real transition alamo heights rural district suburban district, accompanied baby boom , opening of numerous subdivisions within district boundaries. in fact, district doubled during time.


to continue meet needs of growing population, district erected alamo heights high school in 1949-50, original unit of woodridge elementary in 1951-52, howard childhood center in 1956, alamo heights junior school in 1959, , former robbins elementary school in 1964.


today, alamo heights independent school district covers 9.4 square miles , serves students communities of alamo heights, terrell hills, olmos park, , portion of north san antonio.


the university of texas @ san antonio repository collection of 43 flags (8.5 in x 11.5 in.) created students of alamo heights junior school in late 1960s. flags, recreations of flags have flown in texas on course of texas history, hung in students classroom, donated displayed @ hemisfair 68 (1968 world s fair in san antonio, texas). collection donated larry williams, students teacher @ alamo heights junior school.
