the major paris architectural , landscape project of 1930s exposition internationale des arts et techniques dans la vie moderne in 1937, on hill of chaillot. old palace of trocadero, had been used in 2 previous exhibits, demolished , replaced large terrace panoramic view of seine , eiffel tower, , modernist white palais de chaillot, 2 wings enveloped top of hill. picturesque landscape gardens on slopes of hills, built jean-charles alphand 1878 exposition preserved, 21 hectares of new gardens designed léon azéma , architects carlu , boileau. central element of garden became series of cascades, lined statues, , long basin containing rows of fountains , 2 powerful water cannon. basins, fountains , dramatic lighting @ night designed roger-henri expert, designed interior decoration on famous french ocean liner normandie. many of statues exposition, leading french sculptors of time, kept in place after exposition, or found new homes in other new city parks of period.
