in deteriorating economic conditions of 1660s , 1670s many barbadian planters sought better opportunities. in 1663 number of planters in barbados made arrangements proprietors of carolina establishing colony @ cape fear. proprietors, exercise of influence @ court, secured baronetcy yeamans, conferred on him 12 january 1665, , on 11 january 1665 appointed him governor of colony, jurisdiction extending cape fear san mateo.


the region named clarendon county. yeamans instructed explore coast south of cape fear. sailed 3 vessels barbados in january 1665, , reached cape fear, sustained heavy loss on way rough weather. accordingly, returned barbados, leaving management of new settlement deputy, captain robert sandford (whose lieutenant joseph woory, yeamans s nephew). colonists abandoned clarendon autumn of 1667.


in 1669 attempt @ colonisation made. 3 ships of settlers sent port royal island british isles calling first @ barbados. instructed proprietors name governor yeamans named himself , joined expedition until reached bermuda. in bermuda appointed elderly william sayle in place , abruptly returned barbados. expedition continued , founded south carolina s first permanent english settlement in april 1670.


sayle died in march 1671. before death nominated successor deputy governor, joseph west, , appointment approved colonists. yeamans arrived in new colony in 1671 , disappointed not made governor immediately, , used position speaker of colonies first parliament harass west. started build plantation brought 200 african slaves.


on 21 august 1671 proprietors, great dissatisfaction of colonists, appointed yeamans governorship. proclaimed governor of english province of carolina @ charles town on 19 april 1672. in governorship @ bequest of proprietors initiated land survey become charles town , expanded plantation.


the colony during governorship suffered internal dissensions, , threatened both spaniards , indians. proprietors found fault yeamans extravagant , indifferent interests. colonists objected profits exporter of food-stuffs barbados. in april 1674 proprietors replaced yeamans predecessor joseph west, , in same year yeamans returned barbados, died in august.



yeamans epitomized enterprising barbadians played large part in settling south carolina. some, him, resembled pirates ashore both promoted , retarded development of colony; contributed political factionalism endemic during years.
