swindon town (player-coach)

after speculation , prolonged discussions, ince signed one-year contract swindon town player/coach on 31 august 2006. swindon rumoured have beaten likes of birmingham city , west bromwich albion signature. key factor in transfer ince s long standing friendship town manager dennis wise, had played alongside him in england team during 1990s. made full debut swindon in 2–1 victory on mk dons on 12 september 2006.

ince played 1 other game swindon after mk victory – before club announced ince had felt not fulfil playing duties club , contract had been terminated mutual consent, although continued coaching @ club complete coaching badges.

macclesfield town

on 23 october 2006, ince confirmed new player-manager of macclesfield town in succession brian horton. however, ineligible play silkmen until january when transfer window opened, swindon town still held registration. joined macclesfield club bottom of league two, 7 points off nearest rivals. revived confidence , after 3–0 win against chester managed climb off bottom of table. subsequently avoided relegation, albeit on last day of season. on 4 january 2007 ince named league 2 manager of month december. ince played last game of professional football on 5 may 2007 in macclesfield s 1–1 home draw notts county coming off substitute bench replace alan navarro in 85th minute of play.

milton keynes dons (2007–08)

ince unveiled new milton keynes dons manager along assistant ray mathias , fitness coach duncan russell on 25 june 2007. dons reached top of division in september 2007 , other clubs began take serious interest. in october , november 2007, denied rumours being linked managerless premier league teams wigan, derby county , championship team norwich city.

in close-season speculated ince had been contacted blackburn rovers in search appoint new manager, ince himself denied. however, bbc reported ince named blackburn manager end of week of 19 june. appointed on 22 june , became first black british manager in england s top division. on first day of 2008–09 fa premier league season, blackburn faced everton @ goodison park ince s first premier league game blackburn. david dunn opened scoring ince s side , roque santa cruz , andre ooijer later scored in 3–2 win. ince s 2008 summer signings included england international goalkeeper paul robinson, danny simpson (loan), vince grella, carlos villanueva (loan), robbie fowler, mark bunn , keith andrews.

after winning 3 games in 17, ince sacked on 16 december 2008 after 6 months in charge. ince had been blackburn 177 days, 1 of shortest reigns of premier league manager. blackburn fans had been demanding removal following 5–3 loss manchester united @ old trafford in league cup on 3 december 2008. @ game, crowd heard chanting don t know re doing , want incey out singing name of former manager graeme souness.

ince returned management on 28 october 2010, signing three-year deal notts county. on 3 april 2011 left club mutual consent after losing club record 9 games in row, including 2–0 defeat relegation rivals oldham athletic day before.

blackpool

on 18 february 2013, blackpool appointed ince manager on one-year rolling contract. had been watching team, son tom played, in person on year. ince took charge of first match blackpool manager on 20 february 2013, 2–0 defeat against leeds united @ elland road. earned first win on 9 march 2013, 2–1 victory against watford @ vicarage road.

under ince blackpool made best-ever start league season. victory @ bournemouth on 14 september 2013 gave them 16 points out of possible 18, 5 wins , draw in first 6 games. following game @ bournemouth ince given five-match stadium ban football association conduct towards match official in tunnel after game. fa concluded behaviour had constituted violent conduct. fined £4,000. ince left blackpool on 21 january 2014, after less year in charge, becoming fourth-shortest-serving manager in history (40 league games). under management, blackpool won 12 out of 42 games , had not won since 30 november 2013.
