on november 19, 1931, xu zhimo prepared leave nanking attend lecture given lin huiyin @ university in peking. boarded china airways federal stinson detroiter, aircraft contracted chunghwa post deliver airmail on nanjing-beijing route. however, when flight arrived in jinan area, flight encountered severe fog, leaving pilot no clear view land. plane descended mountainous area below unnoticed both pilots looking course according map. when aircraft aiming turn left go course again, hit peak of mountain , broke off right wing. plane spun out of control , crashed mountains near tai city, in shandong province. xu zhimo, suffered fatal cerebral trauma , several cuts on body, killed instantly 1 of 2 pilots. first officer however, survived initial impact, perished due protracted rescue.


it believed accident attributed both pilots misjudgement of flight s altitude failing recognize terrain surrounding them, considered typical cfit.


some rumors, however, outcry death of xu zhimo turned out murder, confirmed untrue.
