government

the city covered 3 house of commons constituencies: stoke-on-trent north, stoke-on-trent central , stoke-on-trent south. until 2017 3 had returned labour mps without interruption since creation in 1950. however, in 2017 general election, stoke-on-trent south constituency surprisingly returned conservative m.p. city within west midlands european parliament constituency.


mayoral system

the city 1 of limited number of english districts elected mayor , council use mayor , council manager executive arrangements, although removed following local referendum on 23 october 2008.


a local referendum approved directly elected mayor system on 3 may 2002 28,601 votes 20,578 (turnout of 27.8%).


mike wolfe, independent candidate, became first directly elected mayor after election on 17 october 2002, narrowly beating labour party candidate george stevenson 300 votes. elected mayor 5 may 2005 5 june 2009 mark meredith (labour party). 2005 election notable because 10% of ballot papers either spoiled or ineligible. meredith s election platform included pledge have referendum on post of elected mayor. scheduled may 2007 , resulted in abolition of mayoral system.


on 23 october 2008, voters returned polls choose between modifying system (to mayor , cabinet) or abolishing position of elected mayor. votes 21,231 abolition , 14,592 modification on turnout of 19.23%.


leader , cabinet system

following citywide referendum abolishing position of elected mayor, leader , cabinet system adopted on 5 june 2009. leader of council elected councillors. each cabinet member makes decisions on portfolio area , explains decisions @ monthly cabinet meetings.


the current leader of council cllr dave conway leader of city independents group, 1 of parties forms city s coalition administration.

lord mayor

the position of lord mayor largely ceremonial. title of lord mayor first conferred on city of stoke-on-trent king george v on 10 july 1928. role of lord mayor decided upon vote amongst elected councillors; candidates selected councillors. current lord mayor councillor anthony munday 2016/17.


between 1910 , 1928 borough, , later, city of stoke-on-trent had mayor rather lord mayor. first mayor of stoke-on-trent cecil wedgwood of wedgwood pottery dynasty.


council

in may 2011 electoral map of city changed. council of 60 members representing 20 wards 3 councillors each, size of council reduced 44 councillors representing 37 wards (31 single member wards, 5 two-member wards , 1 three-member ward). change followed 2008 report stoke-on-trent governance commission secretary of state local government highly crtitical of political system in use in city.


following local elections in may 2015, labour council in stoke-on-trent replaced independent/conservative/ukip coalition.
