the complex replaced cardiff s fourth town hall (which located on western side of st mary s street), built architect horace jones c. 1850–53 (demolished 1913).
the competition design cardiff s fifth town hall , adjacent law courts won in 1897 firm of lanchester, stewart , rickards. construction carried out local builders e. turner , sons.
turned , sons used world s first all-electrically operated building site, including 8 5 ton cranes lift stone blocks. total building cost £129,708 (with concurrently-built law courts next door costing £96,583).
as cardiff received city charter in 1905 while construction underway, current building known city hall.
