latvia 1 of last regions in europe christianized. inhabitants of region latvia once practiced finnic paganism , baltic mythology, practice gradually diminished through course of centuries. in 12th 13th centuries latvia first fell under influence of catholic church, christian kings of denmark, sweden , north german livonian , teutonic military orders fought influence in region in later became known northern crusades.


parts of eastern latvia (notably koknese , jersika principalities) shortly came under influence of viking rulers of rurik dynasty, had adopted orthodox christianity 12th century. after succumbing livonian order in 13th century, influence of orthodox church faded away until 19th century.


despite christianization, local populace in countryside maintained pagan belief system several centuries, pockets of paganism surviving in latvia until 17th century. along rest of traditional holidays, christmas (ziemassvētki) , easter (lieldienas) in latvia still largely retain pagan roots.


during protestant reformation teachings of lutheranism northern germany , scandinavia changed religious landscape in country, , latgale remained catholic due influence of polish-lithuanian commonwealth. before world war ii, 2/3 of latvia protestant; overwhelmingly lutheran scarce calvinist population , individual cases of adhering other protestant confessions.


because of state policy of atheism during soviet era , general european trend of secularization, religiosity declined drastically, , today growing percentage of latvians claims not follow religion.
