mcmxc a.d. released on 3 december 1990. unexpected worldwide commercial success, reaching top 10 in ten countries, including uk 1 week, , no. 6 in u.s. sold on 4 million copies , stayed on billboard 200 chart 282 weeks, period of on 5 years. january 1994, album had sold 14 million copies worldwide. album received total of on 60 platinum awards.


four songs mcmxc a.d. released singles. sadeness (part i) released in november 1990 commercial success. singles mea culpa (part ii) , principles of lust , rivers of belief released in 1991.

in 1991, polydor germany sued cretu , virgin germany infringing on right of personality in gregorian chant samples used in sadeness (part i) , mea culpa . lawsuit settled out of court after cretu agreed pay compensation original creator of samples. case did not cover copyright infringement 1976 chant recordings in public domain.


reissues

a limited edition of mcmxc a.d. released on 4 november 1991 4 remixed tracks. original part of album blends first of 4 additional tracks, , each of additional tracks blend each other. gives album sense of continuation start finish. 1 of remixes, returning silence of rivers of belief, not appear on of singles.


the november 1999 reissue includes 6 remixed tracks on second disc.
