the council works raise awareness problem gambling , programs , services available people affected disorder. provides variety of informative material, brochures , dvds websites, free public.
education & training
representatives council offer presentations @ schools, businesses, non-profits, , consult on problem gambling policy development , review. lead annual conference, regional trainings, , online trainings. trainings aim increase current substance abuse , mental health clinicians’ skills in clinical interventions, addictions treatment, , case management people experiencing gambling disorders.
advocacy
the council works towards responsible public policy guidelines responsible state-supported gambling. advocates services problem gamblers, families, , greater community. started 1987 legislation provided funding council. in 1987 there 1 treatment site available affected problem gambling, of 2012 there 14 sites. council formed massachusetts partnership responsible gambling in 2010. worked national council on problem gambling advocate comprehensive problem gambling act of 2009 federal legislative offices , key massachusetts stakeholders.
referral/helpline
set in 1987, helpline has provided free, live, confidential , anonymous caller responses 24 hours day, 7 days week. council staff members equipped offer information , referrals self-help, treatment providers , other community resources people experiencing problems gambling. free , offered in english, chinese, vietnamese, khmer, , spanish.
prevention
the council increased focus on prevention initiatives in 2007, bringing community, faith, , educational institutions strengthen prevention of problem gambling efforts in at-risk communities. council has developed special prevention programs african american, latino american , asian americans, older adults, youth , college students.
