in 1908, parks worked united states land office in denver mineral examiner 2 months before taking similar position in alaska. following american entry world war i, joined army corps of engineers. rising rank of captain war s end, returned land office after military service.
in 1920, parks appointed chief of united states land office in juneau. 4 years later in anchorage working assistant supervisor of surveys of public lands alaska. during time land office, traveled extensively throughout territory, gaining intimate knowledge of geography , becoming acquainted both white , indigenous populations of alaska.
