the zoo center, built in 1908, one-story beaux-arts building located in astor court. exhibit houses blue tree monitors, mertens water monitors, , western spiny-tailed monitors (varanus acanthurus brachyurus) indoors, , has both indoor , outdoor enclosures komodo dragons, aldabra giant tortoises, , southern white rhinoceros. building s animal frieze carved a.p. proctor. in 2000, building landmarked. building east of children s zoo , south of madagascar!.


the building designed zoo s elephant house , has held 3 elephant species on history. building has been home various rhinoceros species, hippopotamus, domestic bactrian camel, malayan tapir, , north sulawesi babirusa. building held rapunzel , 1 of few sumatran rhinos held in u.s. zoos, until death in 2005.
