according eurovision rules, nations exceptions of host country , big 5 (france, germany, italy, spain , united kingdom) required qualify 1 of 2 semi-finals in order compete final; top ten countries each semi-final progress final. european broadcasting union (ebu) split competing countries 6 different pots based on voting patterns previous contests, countries favourable voting histories put same pot. on 31 january 2017, special allocation draw held placed each country 1 of 2 semi-finals, half of show perform in. serbia placed second semi-final, held on 11 may 2017, , scheduled perform in first half of show.


once competing songs 2017 contest had been released, running order semi-finals decided shows producers rather through draw, similar songs not placed next each other. serbia set open show , perform in position 1, before entry austria.
