royapuram railway station place laying down of second railway line of south asia commenced in 1853. idea of railway in south india long predated other railway lines in indian subcontinent when railway line madras proposed in 1832. in 1840s, 15 years after stephenson s steam engine undertook historic stockton-darlington journey passenger coach, laying of railway line in south india discussed in london. in 1845, madras railway company formed , plan still under discussion. 4 years later, great india peninsula company formed in 1849, built 21-mile-long route bori bunder (later victoria terminus) in bombay thane, becoming india s first railway line opened traffic on 16 april 1853. madras railway company reconstituting in 1849, plans railway line in south revived further efforts mercantile community of madras presidency, lobbied rail connectivity. work on southern line began in 1853 , railway line extended royapuram (madras) arcot, titular capital of nawab of carnatic (the present day walajapet, near ranipet in tamil nadu). royapuram selected location new station on edge of settlement of british traders , natives near fort st. george. opening of main terminus, royapuram station, on 28 june 1856 governor lord harris, railway line opened traffic on 1 july 1856. on inaugural day, 2 services—royapuram ambur , royapuram tiruvallur—were operated. first train, manufactured simpson , company, started journey governor , 300 european people royapuram walajapet , stately dinner arranged in ambur. second train carried indian invitees shorter distance till triveloor (the present day thiruvallur). however, not known whether dinner arranged people in second train.

on 6 september 1856, illustrated london news depicted regal inauguration of palatial railway station in madras, in journal described second railway line in india:



according journal, captain barnett fort described rooms in royapuram station being elegant , superbly furnished handsome punkahs & c. governor lord harris, in speech, congratulated madras railway company, manager major jenkins , had worked on railway , said cost of £5,500 mile worth investment , looked forward equally expeditious completion of additional 450 miles of track west coast, little south of calicut.

since then, royapuram railway station in city 17 years till madras central station became functional in 1873. 1873, trains towards northern regions of country operated chennai central , towards southern regions of state operated royapuram station.


with development of chennai port, cargoes port transported via royapuram station. resulted in egmore railway station becoming terminus southbound trains in 1907. on 9 august 1979, lines @ station electrified electrification of chennai beach–basin bridge section. lines royapuram korukkupet electrified on 26 september 1987. korukkupet railway station becoming functional container terminus, royapuram station started functioning 1 of suburban stations in chennai beach-arokkonam section of chennai suburban railway network. building adjacent station built around same time of station, functioning headquarters of madras railway company, demolished few years ago.
