newcastle united renamed newcastle united jets when joined a-league in inaugural 2005-06 season. club renamed project new image , prevent confusion english club newcastle united.


the name jets reference raaf base williamtown, located 20 kilometres north of newcastle. club s logo depicts 3 f/a-18 hornets, royal australian air force has based @ williamtown.

season 3 saw okon retire , rodriguez, , carle leave leaving jets depleted squad. con constantine brought in former european golden boot winner mario jardel past prime , did not last season out. nevertheless number of young players jets finished 2nd on goal difference after regular season , crowned champions after defeating arch rivals central coast mariners 1-0 in grand final. first newcastle football team. in season 2008-09 jets represent a-league in afc asian champions league.
