at city meeting on february 6, 1905, city approved plans 2 story building take advantage of carnegie s funds. building designed architect edward lippincott tilton, suggested carnegie himself. building have reading rooms, cloak rooms, , lecture room on second floor. ludington carnegie library building declared library last thousand years.


the current ludington public library constructed old appeal building once stood. contractor builder john anderson received contract build new carnegie library in 1905. lowest general contractor bid of $11,380.33 of 6 bids received city of ludington. local ludington newspaper reported minutes of city council showing plans new library , construction had been approved.

in 1905 ludington received 1 of 53 grants given michigan communities andrew carnegie construction of libraries. had special program gave grants cover cost of construction of free public access libraries under conditions. carnegie grant of $15,000.00 , matching funds city of ludington put forth build , support new library exists day.


andrew carnegie distributed on 40 million dollars given in grants united states communities erect 1,689 libraries. conditions these new libraries carnegie provide funds erection of building, equal 2 dollars per local area resident. local government had provide construction site , amount equal 10 percent of carnegie grant annually city tax revenues support newly funded library. city of ludington provided construction site , agreed $1,500 annually (10% of construction cost) maintenance of building. on march 1, 1906 library opened. on opening in march 1906 library had assembled collection of 3,800 books.
