in 152, lucius named quaestor 153, 2 years before legal age of twenty-five (marcus held office @ seventeen). in 154, consul, 9 years before legal age of thirty-two (marcus held office @ eighteen , twenty-three). lucius had no other titles, except of son of augustus . lucius had markedly different personality marcus: enjoyed sports of kinds, hunting , wrestling; took obvious pleasure in circus-games , gladiatorial fights. did not marry until 164. pius not fond of adopted son s interests. keep lucius in family, sure never give boy either power or glory. take typical example, lucius not appear on alexandrian coinage until 160/1.


in 156, pius turned seventy. found difficult keep himself upright without stays. started nibbling on dry bread give him strength stay awake through morning receptions. pius aged, marcus have taken on more administrative duties, more still when praetorian prefect (an office secretarial military) gavius maximus died in 156 or 157. in 160, marcus , lucius designated joint consuls following year. perhaps pius ill; in case, died before year out. 2 days before death, biographer records, pius @ ancestral estate in lorium. ate alpine cheese @ dinner quite greedily. in night vomited; had fever next day. day after that, summoned imperial council, , passed state , daughter marcus. ordered golden statue of fortune, had been in bedroom of emperors, should go marcus bedroom. pius turned over, if going sleep, , died. 7 march 161. marcus emperor.
