in 1986 weiland met bassist robert deleo @ black flag concert in long beach, california. 2 of them discussing love interests, when realized 1 of them same girl both dating. developed bond on incident, , ended moving vacated apartment. weiland s childhood friends corey hicock , david allin rounded out group, both of whom replaced eric kretz , deleo s brother dean. took name stone temple pilots because of fondness initials stp. in 1 of band s first opening performances mighty joe young, opened electric love hogs, guitarist dave kushner 1 day co-found weiland s later band velvet revolver. in 1992, released first album, core, spawning 4 hits ( sex type thing , wicked garden , creep , , plush ).

in 1994, stp released second record, purple, saw development of more distinctive identity band. core, purple big success band, spawning 3 hit singles ( big empty , vasoline , interstate love song ) , selling more 6 million copies. critical response purple more favorable, spin magazine calling quantum leap band s previous album.

in 1995, weiland formed alternative rock band magnificent bastards session drummer victor indrizzo in san diego. band included zander schloss , jeff nolan on guitars , bob thompson on bass. 2 songs recorded magnificent bastards, mockingbird girl, composed nolan, schloss, , weiland, appeared in film tank girl , on soundtrack, , cover of john lennon s how sleep? recorded tribute album, working class hero: tribute john lennon. weiland rejoined stone temple pilots in fall of 1995, stp forced cancel of 1996–1997 tour in support of third release, tiny music... songs vatican gift shop, sold 2 million albums. weiland encountered problems drug addiction @ time well, inspired of songs in late-1990s, , resulted in prison time.

in 1999, stp regrouped once again , released no. 4. album contained hit single sour girl featured surreal music video sarah michelle gellar. same year, weiland recorded 2 songs short-lived supergroup wondergirls. during time period weiland spent 5 months in jail drug possession.

in november 2000, weiland invited perform on show vh1 storytellers surviving members of doors. weiland did vocals on 2 doors songs, break on through (to other side) , 5 1 . same month stone temple pilots appeared on doors tribute cd, stoned immaculate own rendition of break on through lead track. on june 19, 2001, stp released fifth album, shangri-la dee da. same year band headlined family values tour along linkin park, staind , static-x. in late 2002, band broke deleo brothers , weiland having had significant altercations stage.

in 2008, stone temple pilots announced 73-date u.s. tour on april 7 , performed first time since 2002. reunion tour kicked off @ rock on range festival on may 17, 2008. according dean deleo, steps toward stone temple pilots reunion started simple phone call weiland s wife. invited deleo brothers play @ private beach party, led reconciliation of weiland , deleo brothers. however, weiland said in 2010 radio interview promote band s self-titled release reunion result of dean calling him , asking if d interested in reuniting band headline coachella festival.

stp s reunion tour success, , band continued tour throughout 2009 , began recording sixth studio album. stp s first album since 2001, stone temple pilots, released on may 25, 2010.

in september 2010, stp announced rescheduling several united states tour dates band take short break. stp toured southeast asia first time in 2011, playing in philippines (manila), singapore , indonesia (jakarta). following this, band played successful shows in australia, including sell out performances in sydney , melbourne.

the band said interested in 20th anniversary tour celebrate release of core scott commenting on january 2, 2012, well, re doing lot of special things. [there s] lot of archival footage re putting together, coffee table book, brand new album – many ideas. box set , tour, of course. however, while band did tour in 2012, did not perform album in entirety promised nor did release coffee table book, archival footage, or new album.

stp began experience problems in 2012 said have been caused tensions between weiland , rest of band. despite band s claims fall tour celebrating 20th anniversary of core, did not happen. on february 27, 2013, shortly before solo tour set commence, stone temple pilots announced on website [...]they [had] officially terminated scott weiland .

weiland criticized band after hired linkin park singer chester bennington replacement, claiming still member , shouldn t calling stone temple pilots without him.

in 2002, former guns n roses members – guitarist slash, bassist duff mckagan , drummer matt sorum – former wasted youth guitarist dave kushner looking singer form new band. throughout career weiland had become acquainted 4 musicians; became friends mckagan after attending same gym, in rehab @ same time sorum , once played on same bill kushner. weiland sent 2 discs of material work with, felt first disc sounded bad company gone wrong. when sent second disc, weiland more positive, comparing core-era stone temple pilots, though turned them down because stone temple pilots had not yet separated.

when stone temple pilots disbanded in 2003, band sent weiland new music, took studio , added vocals. music became song set me free. although delivered music band himself, weiland still unsure whether or not wanted join them, despite performing @ industry showcase @ mates. recorded 2 songs producer nick raskulinecz, recorded version of set me free , cover of pink floyd s money, soundtracks movies hulk , italian job, respectively. weiland joined band after, , set me free managed peak @ number 17 on mainstream rock chart without radio promotion or record label. prior screening of hulk @ universal studios band chose name. after seeing movie revolution studios, slash liked beginning of word, thinking of revolver because of multiple meanings; name of gun, subtext of revolving door suited band name of beatles album. when suggested revolver band, weiland suggested black velvet revolver, liking idea of intimate velvet juxtaposed deadly gun. arrived @ velvet revolver, announcing @ press conference , performance showcase @ el rey theatre while performing songs set me free , slither covers of nirvana s negative creep , sex pistols pretty vacant , guns n roses s easy .

velvet revolver s debut album contraband released in june 2004 success. debuted @ number 1 on billboard 200 , has sold on 3 million copies worldwide date. 2 of album s songs, slither , fall pieces , reached number 1 on billboard modern rock tracks chart. song slither won grammy award best hard rock performance vocal in 2005, award weiland had won stp song plush in 1994. @ 2005 grammy awards, weiland (along rest of velvet revolver) performed beatles song across universe along bono, brian wilson, norah jones, stevie wonder, steven tyler, billie joe armstrong, alison krauss , alicia keys. on 2 july 2005, weiland , velvet revolver performed @ live 8 in london, united kingdom; in weiland condemned using strong language before uk watershed during performance.

velvet revolver released second album, libertad, on july 3, 2007, peaking @ number 5 on billboard 200. album s first single builds quick machines peaked @ 74 on hot canadian digital singles. second , third singles, last fight , out door , both peaked @ number 16 , 34 on mainstream rock chart, respectively. critical reception album mixed. though critics praised album , felt libertad gave band identity of own, outside of guns n roses , stone temple pilots comparisons, others described album bland , noted band seem play[ing] strengths instead of finding collective sound.

in 2007, stone temple pilots guitarist dean deleo discussed weiland offer concert promoter headline several summer festivals. weiland accepted , said had cleared brief tour velvet revolver bandmates. explained, cool. wasn t , , said rest of band stopped talking him.on march 20, 2008 weiland revealed @ velvet revolver s show in glasgow band s final tour. after several flares on personal blogs , in interviews, on april 1 announced number of media outlets weiland no longer in velvet revolver. stone temple pilots subsequently reunited tour , velvet revolver began auditioning singers.

in january 2012, guitarist dave kushner announced velvet revolver reunite weiland first time in 4 years 1 night, 3 song gig raise money family of deceased musician john o brien. on future hold band , weiland, kushner replied haven t played in 4 years, , re like, let s see how goes.

in april 2012, weiland remarked reunite permanently velvet revolver, saying if maynard james keenan can perfect circle , tool, there s no reason why shouldn t go , both bands . further in may in interview abc radio weiland said had reunited band permanently tour , album, denied few days later slash in interview 93x.

the project started in 2011, bumblefoot recording parts debut album in between touring guns n roses. weiland wrote , recorded vocals after sharing song files , forth bumblefoot 2012 2013. weiland took part in promotional photo shoots , music videos in october 2014.

their debut album, self-titled, tentatively scheduled spring 2015 , released in june. on january 21, 2015 released 2:06 teaser of new album. bumblefoot producer , engineer on album. first single released album til dust gone . album contains 11 tracks. however, weiland distanced himself project, stating project did supposed have written lyrics , melodies, , paid it. did production work on it, , next thing knew there press releases in band. (...) m not in band. weiland later added s kinda got when wasn t doing else.... sang on these stereo tracks , sent back. s not m part of. after death, weiland replaced in band former creed vocalist scott stapp.

solo career

while stp went on hiatus after release of tiny music..., weiland released solo album in 1998 called 12 bar blues. weiland wrote of songs on album, , collaborated several artists, notably daniel lanois, sheryl crow, brad mehldau , jeff nolan.

on november 25, 2008, weiland released second solo album, happy in galoshes, produced weiland , songwriting-producing partner doug grean. weiland went on tour in 2009 promote album.

on august 30, 2011, weiland released covers album, compilation of scott weiland cover songs, exclusively through website. album released along scott s autobiography until decided release separately, stating, [it] turned out re going release single , put out on own, cause think s...it s sort of pin ups, guess d say.

on october 4, 2011, weiland released wonderful time of year, album consisting entirely of christmas music. weiland supported album club tour in united states. 2 promotional recordings taken album, cover versions of winter wonderland , ll home christmas respective music videos.

in november 2012 interview rolling stone, weiland said foresaw 2013 being busy year him , band, wildabouts. scott weiland , wildabouts planned record new album , go on tour.

in june 2014, in interview san diego radio station kbzt, weiland stated debut album wildabouts, titled blaster, released in november 2014. however, pushed , released on march 31, 2015. guitarist jeremy brown died 1 day before album s release. cause of death determined multiple drug intoxication, coronary atherosclerosis , cardiomegaly being significant contributing factors. nick maybury replaced brown in april 2015.
