while new super mario bros. wii 2d platformer, of characters , objects 3d polygonal renderings on 2d backgrounds, resulting in 2.5d effect (also seen in new super mario bros.) visually simulates 3d computer graphics. players can play either mario, brother luigi or 2 toad characters: 1 blue , 1 yellow (with first player mario). controls similar of new super mario bros., albeit added abilities of spinning in mid-air shaking wii remote; , picking up, carrying, , throwing other players. game not feature online multiplayer. in multiplayer mode, there can 4 players simultaneously. if players lose life, have @ least 1 life in reserve, re-emerge encased inside bubble, , can resume play once player frees them touching bubble or tossing fire ball, ice ball or koopa shell (the player can shake wii remote move bubble closer active player, cannot free themselves). if players lose life , not have more lives, must use continue , start on last save point 5 lives left. players can encase inside bubble pressing button while more skilled player traverses difficult segment. if every character in co-op session enters bubble @ same time (whether through death or pressing button), lose level , must restart.


on levels in multiplayer mode, if 1 or more players not keep 1 in lead, view pan out bit player[s] in rear can still in view. if players still not catch up, dragged edge of screen, until move forward faster or lose life fall or other object. if 1 player enters pipe, climbs vine, grabs flagpole @ end of stage, etc. without others, other players warp same place after short time, or have limited amount of time grab pole before course ends. on vertically scrolling courses, being left below screen results in losing life. on world map, mario (player 1) controls navigation.


players return map screen if run out of lives, or if players lose lives @ same time, leaving no 1 free them. levels, there midway flag if touched return player point after dying , being sent map screen. stages completed getting @ least 1 player touch goal @ end, though bonus awarded if players manage grab hold of flag within 3 seconds of first player grabbing it. in few levels, in addition normal goal , flag pole, there alternative exits leading flag pole red flag. reaching goal open new path on map, leading new stages on overworld map and, in worlds, warp cannon (which blast player off later world).


along usual mario series items, mini mushroom new super mario bros., new items have been added, including propeller mushroom, allows players fly shaking wii remote; , penguin suit which, on top of ice flower s ability, allows players slide along ground , across water have better control on ice , in water. players able ride on yoshis, appear in levels , can swallow enemies, perform ground pounds, , flutter in air. levels can accessed via map screen, , enemies roaming it. if player bumps 1 while traveling map, mini-boss fight initiated; if successful in fight, players can earn 3 super mushrooms. there toad houses players can earn additional lives , items can equipped on map screen. @ points, toad appear trapped in 1 of completed levels, , player can choose rescue him block , carry him safely end of stage earn bonus lives (this can done 1 player). there 3 star coins hidden in each course can spent on hint movies show secrets, such location of secret goal or how gain infinite 1-ups.


the game includes simultaneous multiplayer capability of 4 players. in addition main story mode, can played in either single-player or multiplayer modes, there 2 dedicated multiplayer modes. free-for-all mode ranks players @ end of each course score, coins, , enemy kills; while other mode, coin battle, ranks players on amount of coins collected.


the game played either in classic style, wii remote held horizontally, or in nunchuk style, nunchuk used movement. actions, such jumping , attacks, performed buttons, whereas others, spinning in midair , picking other players, performed shaking wii remote. areas within levels, such specific platforms, can manipulated tilting wii remote.


the game first on wii feature super guide , new system devised mario creator shigeru miyamoto. during single-player mode, if player dies 8 times in row in level, green ! block appears, allowing computer-controlled luigi show player safe path through level. player may interrupt guide @ time , take control. after luigi completes it, player has option try level again, or skip completely. however, luigi not reveal star coin locations or secret exits.
