medical uses

the main use 4-aminosalicylic acid treatment of tuberculosis infections.


tuberculosis

aminosalicylic acid introduced clinical use in 1944. second antibiotic found effective in treatment of tuberculosis, after streptomycin. pas formed part of standard treatment tuberculosis prior introduction of rifampicin , pyrazinamide.


its potency less of current 5 first-line drugs (isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide, , streptomycin) treating tuberculosis , cost higher, still useful in treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. pas used in combination other anti-tb drugs.


the dose when treating tuberculosis 150 mg/kg/day divided 2 4 daily doses; usual adult dose therefore approximately 2 4 grams 4 times day. sold in paser jacobus pharmaceutical, comes in form of 4 g packets of delayed-release granules. drug should taken acid food or drink (orange, apple or tomato juice). pas once available in combination formula isoniazid called pasinah or pycamisan 33.


the european medicines agency (ema) has recommended granting marketing authorization pas in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in adults , children when other treatments cannot devised reasons of resistance or tolerability.
