assemblymember dierdre scozzafava designated republican nominee. on october 31, 2009, scozzafava suspended campaign and, on november 1, 2009, endorsed democratic candidate seat.


democratic party

state senator darrel aubertine, represents of northern portion of congressional district, rumored potential democratic candidate, declined. state senator david valesky, represents of southern portion of congressional district, said interested in running, later decided against it. declining run assemblywoman addie jenne russell, district includes watertown.


the chair of new york democratic party stated scozzafava s husband had spoken key local democrats possibility of switching democratic party before running seat.

conservative party

the conservative party chose doug hoffman nominee after 3 other potential candidates said support him, though hoffman did not live in district. conservative party declined support republican party s nomination of pro-choice, pro-same-sex-marriage, pro-union assemblymember dede scozzafava, conservative party chairman mike long described nice lady liberal.


hoffman had sought republican nomination. in july, when scozzafava nominated instead, hoffman offered her. email read: hi dede, congratulations , best of luck in candidacy. let me know if there can help. doug. shortly thereafter, however, contacted conservative party leaders, seeking support own candidacy. 1 republican leader said hoffman, while seeking republican nomination, had repeatedly pledged support nominee.

the chairman of independence party of new york announced party have cross-endorsed aubertine had run, decision not run, party instead backed scozzafava. after suspended campaign, state chairman of party endorsed bill owens, though several local chairmen instead endorsed hoffman. scozzafava remained on ballot on independence party line (as republican line).
