between 1920 , 1924, cao yu attended tianjin nankai high school, offered western style study program. school maintained society of dramatic arts in students produced western works, notably of henrik ibsen , eugene o neill, well-known authors in china translations published hu shih. cao yu took acting roles in number of society s dramatic productions, going far assume female role of nora in ibsen s doll s house. known have assisted in translation of englishman john galsworthy s 1909 work, strife.


after finishing studies @ nankai secondary school, cao yu first matriculated @ nankai university s department of political science transferred next year tsinghua university, study until graduating in 1934 degree in western languages , literature. during university studies, cao yu improved abilities in both russian , english. course of studies required reading works of such western authors bernard shaw , eugene o neill, , of russian authors such anton chekhov , maxim gorky, translated works of classic greek writers, euripides , aeschylus. immersion in western literature mark yu s style in writing genres including spoken theater had had little tradition in china prior yu s influence (as opposed sung chinese opera), . during course of last year @ university, cao yu completed first work, thunderstorm, mark milestone in chinese theater of 20th century.
