the first newcastle-based team play in national league newcastle kb united formed in 1978, 1 year after inception of national soccer league (nsl). kb united had strong following in initial seasons crowd of on 15,000 attending first home game @ international sports centre on march 5, 1978 fans turning out see 4-1 loss hakoah eastern suburbs during first seasons crowds including record crowd of on 18,000 in 1979 season averages around 10,000. english star bobby charlton , local prodigy craig johnston both played @ least 1 game kb united.
