the fatal accident of materassi during 1928 italian grand prix held @ autodromo nazionale monza


on 17th lap of 1928 italian grand prix held @ autodromo nazionale monza, materassi lost control of talbot 700 when tried overtake giulio foresti’s bugatti t35c on main straight @ on 200 km/h. talbot swerved left, jumped on three-meter deep , four-meter wide protection ditch , fence , crashed grandstand.


materassi killed instantly along twenty spectators , large number of people injured. other drivers of scuderia materassi withdrew race after accident, event continued , won louis chiron. 3 days later 1 of injured spectators died in hospital, making total death toll 22. other sources state 27 spectators killed in all.


by either estimation worst accident, respect number of lives lost, occur @ grand prix , surpassed 1955 le mans disaster in history of motor racing. result italian grand prix cancelled in 1929 , 1930.
